My name is Miriam Smith, and I am the president of East Davison Village Community Group. I have been in this area for over 50 years, and I love my community and would like it to be revitalized with new homes and businesses. I worked for the Detroit Medical Center for over 25 years in the Human Resource Department. I am also a caretaker for my mom, who is 87 years old. I enjoy reading and comedy shows. My motto is that I want to be a solution to problems, not the creator of problems.
I'm a Generation Detroit Resident, Community Leader, and activist. My Passions are Community and Family. My goals are to impede and dismantle social and economic inequities and address environmental and agricultural sustainability in urban communities, addressing food insecurities, beautification, and community enhancement. Educated within the Detroit Board of Education, Graduate of Wayne County Community College with AA. Skills sets include computer/technical skills, administrative skills, motivational speaking, and organic farming.
I’m an over 60-year resident of East Davison Village. I have four lovely daughters, three granddaughters, one grandson, and two great-grandsons. I enjoy reading, relaxing, traveling, and practicing self-care. My passion for helping others comes naturally; the joy of bringing together families and friends is so important to me. The ability to connect with people and share love, unity, and peace within the boundaries of where they live is a goal that I would like to achieve. I received an Associate degree in Accounting. However, I use many skills and talents to help others. I worked in the automotive industry for 25 years as a union representative and quality inspector. My driving force is to deliver guidance and help to all people, regardless of past experiences or circumstances; we should all be treated fairly and equally.
I am East Davison Village Community Group's Board Secretary and a founding member of EDVCG. I retired as a Court Reporter from Wayne County's Juvenile System. I am a graduate of Davison Elementary School, Cleveland Middle School, Pershing High School, and Shaw College at Detroit. I am proud of my work with our Block Club, leading the transformation of a Land Bank house with five adjoining lots, soon to be our neighborhood Hub. We formed EDVCG in 2017 and have deep neighborhood ties, many across generations.
I graduated from Davison Elementary School, Cleveland Middle School, and Pershing High School. I have been a member of The Historic Little Rock Missionary Baptist Church for 32 years. I serve in the Nurses and Food Program Ministry at the church. I worked as a nurse assistant during my senior year in high school at Downtown Detroit Memorial Hospital. From there, I also transferred to North Detroit General Hospital as a nurse assistant. I joined Primerica Financial Services and am certified as a Financial Service Agent. Since 2017, I've worked as a community worker for our neighborhood Block Club with East Davison Village Community Group as a Sergeant-at-Arms. I currently serve in a program that helps seniors and children through the Methodist Children's Home Society (MCHS) at the Considine Center on Woodward at Holbrook by way of Durfee Middle School.
